Strings of Complements
A Winter Project ONLY for CRGQG Members
Welcome to Strings of Complements, a bright, colorful, and fun project to lighten up the dreary days of Winter. From December to March, we will enjoy 5 training sessions on Zoom when Kathleen Roulet will share information, tips, and tricks for working with color in our quilts. Training sessions will include discussions about:
3 different piecing techniques (and variations) used to create string quilts, and why string quilts are a great way to practice and learn about color.

Field of Asters
This string quilt pattern conveys the cheerful autumn color of a drift of flowering asters. The changing values of purple create a sense of sunlit petals with shadows, and the bright, warm touches of yellow at the flower’s center help to keep the eye moving across the quilt. This string quilt is foundation-pieced.
Sunset in the Cascades
Using dark shades of blue and bright colors of orange, this design creates the effect of the last blazing light of day touching the tops of darkening mountains. The scene relies on sharp value and temperature contrasts. The eye moves from the fiery warmth of bright orange to the dark coldness of deep blue. This quilt is created with pieced strips.
Accidental & Deliberate
This abstract design focuses on the interplay between warm and cool to move the eye from a focal point to other areas of the quilt. The cool blue-green becomes a backdrop for the sparks of red-orange that give this quilt a sense of vitality and high energy. This quilt is created with pieced strips.
Diamond Drama
This pattern relies on a change in values to create a strong graphic image. The choice of red-violet and yellow-green gives this design an extra boost of bright, warm, high energy. This string quilt is foundation-pieced.
